He Goes Before Me

“Then he stood and cried out to the armies of Israel, and said to them, “Why have you come out to line up for battle? Am I not a Philistine, and you the servants of Saul? Choose a man for yourselves, and let him come down to me.

Then David spoke to the men who stood by him, saying, “What shall be done for the man who kills this Philistine and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?”

And Saul said to David, “You are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him; for you are a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.
I Samuel‬ ‭17:8, 26, 33 (NKJV)

Israel saw themselves as servants of Saul; David saw himself as a member of God’s army. Saul saw David as a mere child who will never win goliath who fought in war since his youth.

Why was Israel so afraid of the Philistine army? They could have chosen to remember the days of old where they overcome their armies because of God. Instead of looking towards God, they looked upon their ability and came to the conclusion that they would never win the battle. All it took was a boy - who was not drafted into Saul’s army - to remember and trust in God.

So the Philistine came, and began drawing near to David, and the man who bore the shield went before him.

“Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.”
‭‭1 Samuel 17:41‬, 45 ‭(NKJV‬‬)

Goliath had an armor bearer, one whom man could see. Who went before David? God was his armor bearer, one whom man could not see.

Remember that you are a member of God’s army. Instead of looking upon your own ability, look towards God. He can accomplish through you what man thinks will be impossible.

"The LORD is the one who goes ahead of you; He will be with you. He will not fail you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed." - Deuteronomy 31:8
